Abbey Timber carry a large range of Australian hardwoods in unseasoned F11-F22 in a variety of different species. Some of those species include Tallowwood, Ironbark, Blackbutt, Spotted gum and Turpentine. When choosing unseasoned hardwoods its important select class 1 hardwoods to ensure you have minimal shrinkage and cracking/checking issues. We recommend when using unseasoned hardwoods to order them in a sawn section and when delivered to site give the timber a quick belt sand with a course sanding belt (60grit) to remove the loose grain and splintery edges and immediately coat with a quality film build up oil like Sikkens HLSe oil-based timber stain to seal and protect the timber. By doing this help trap the moisture in the timber slowing down the drying time which helps to minimise the amount of surface checking, cracking and shrinkage of the hardwood. By dressing unseasoned hardwoods your closing, the grain up which prevents the oil from being able to penetrate deep into the surface and makes any surface checking or cracking more noticeable. When using unseasoned hardwoods, you will get some checking/cracking and shrinkage in the appearance of the hardwood, but this does not take away the structural performance of the hardwood and will give the hardwood a traditional appearance as it’s been used for thousands of years for many types of applications.
