The top 10 questions homeowners ask about composite decking (and how to answer them)

News

If you install decks, you have heard these questions before. Clients want to know how composite performs, how hot it gets, whether it fades, what the warranty covers, and how to keep it clean. This guide gives you clear, ready-to-use answers that make those conversations easier.

The Abbey Timber trade team works with installers every day who get asked the same questions. With the largest range of decking timbers, composite decking, hardware, and tools ready for fast delivery, we understand what matters to homeowners and how to explain it.

1. Will composite decking fade over time?

Quality composite decking has a polymer capping for protection from the harsh Australian climate, Abbey Timber’s Modern Deck WPC range has a fully capped Polymer outer shell.  Boards in Abbey Timber’s composite range use UV-resistant pigments that minimise colour change over time, keeping decks looking newer for longer.

2. Does composite decking get hot in the sun?

Both composite and timber decking absorb heat in full sun. The surface temperature depends on the colour, aspect, and airflow beneath the deck. Lighter tones stay cooler, especially on north or north-west facing decks, and good ventilation below the surface helps to reduce heat naturally. The new technology of Polymer used on Modern Deck has a cooling additive that makes it cooler than many of its competitors especially in the non-capped decking on the market.

3. Is composite decking slippery when wet?

Homeowners often ask about grip underfoot, particularly around pools or in shaded areas. Composite decking, like Abbey Timber’s Modern Deck, is wet pendulum tested to Australian Standard AS 4586. This independent test measures slip resistance in wet conditions, with Modern Deck achieving a P4 classification using Slider 55. In simple terms, that means it performs very well for typical residential outdoor areas when installed according to guidance.

4. Will it warp, split, or crack?

Capped WPC Composite decking is designed to withstand the harsh Australian climate.  Because it does not absorb water the way timber can, it will not swell, shrink, or splinter over time. Proper installation, including correct spacing and fixings, ensures the boards can expand and contract naturally without warping. It is important to know WPC decking does expand and contract with temperature change, so breaker boards are recommended over butt joints. 5. Does it need sealing or painting?

One of the benefits of composite decking is that it is supplied pre-finished and never requires oiling, sealing, or painting. That means no regular recoating and less maintenance for your clients. A simple wash with mild detergent and water will keep the surface looking fresh year after year.

6. How long does composite decking last?

Quality solid co-extruded boards are designed for decades of service. As an example, Abbey Timber’s Modern Deck carries a 25-year residential and 15-year commercial warranty covering breakage, fungal decay, insect damage, rotting, and splintering when installed to the guidelines.

7. What about scratches or stains?

Composite decking is engineered to be highly resistant to scratches and stains; however, care still helps. Encourage clients to use furniture pads and clean spills promptly. For minor marks, follow the manufacturer’s care guide. Options may include a light wire-brush with the grain or gentle heat treatment tested first on a discreet spot.

8. How do you clean and maintain it?

Cleaning and maintenance are simple. Sweep off debris regularly, then wash with hot soapy water and a soft bristle brush in the direction of the grain. A good clean three to four times a year is ideal.

A pressure washer can be used safely at up to 1800 psi with a fan nozzle held about 30 cm from the surface. Do not use bleach, acetone, or sugar soap. Keeping the surface clear of leaves and dirt will make each clean faster and prevent marks.

9. Does mould grow on composite decking?

It is rare, but mould can appear on any outdoor surface if organic matter and standing water are present. It’s important to know mould, BBQ fat, tree sap etc will not stick to our Polymer capping but we recommend removing it as soon as it appears using hot soapy water and a soft brush. Keeping the deck free from leaves, dirt, and debris is recommended.

10. How will composite decking look in my home?

Modern composite decking has come a long way from the early versions that looked overly plastic. Today’s boards feature detailed grain patterns, tonal variation, and natural textures that closely resemble real timber.

Abbey Timber’s Modern Deck boards have two complementary colours on each side, so homeowners can choose their preferred finish at installation or add a contrasting border for a more architectural look. The result is a realistic, low-maintenance deck that complements a wide range of Australian home styles.
